Bonsai Society of Greater Cincinnati Upcoming Programs - 2000-2001 Schedule
JAPANESE GARDEN DESIGN AND ACCENTS JAN 18 The program will be presented by Dewey Hollister, of Ammon Landscape, Inc. The discussion will cover the Japanese garden design and how to employ accents in and around your bonsai displays. Dewey has been involved in designing Japanese gardens throughout the Cincinnati area. LINDSAY SHIBA FEB 15 Lindsay is highly recommended by Ben Oki, who he has assisted on numerous demonstrations. He began the study of Bonsai under his father in 1970. Lindsay developed an appreciation of deciduous trees and accent plantings during his formal training under Khan Komai. He teaches beginning through advanced workshops courses at the family nursery in Upland California. MARTIN SCHMALENBERG MAR 15 Marty is the Director of Asian Studies at Blair Academy in New Jersey where he teaches Japanese, Chinese, and Korean history, culture and religion. He has been involved with bonsai and stone appreciation for over twenty years, and has traveled extensively through Asia. Marty is an excellent instructor and speaker. BOON MANAKITIVIPART APR 19 Boon was one of the headliners at Brussel’s Spring Rendezvous and is a terrific talent. During the rendezvous he conducted workshops with black pines and satsuki azaleas and did a demonstration on a shimpaku juniper. He lives in Almaeda, California where he is a full-time bonsai artist and the sensei of Bay Island Bonsai. In 1995, Boon won the Ben Oki International Design Award. The story of the material is in the first two issues of 1996 BCI Bonsai magazine. Boon has studied bonsai as a formal apprentice of Yasuo Mitsuya at Tokai En in Toyohashi, Japan. Lewis and Suthin Sukosolvisit. Some 18 great workshops are available. The best news of all is that he is making a special registration offer to any club that pre-registers 10 or more of its members will receive a 50% discount off of each member’s registration fee. The rates have been increased to $150 early registration and full fare is $175 after May 11. The office there would like the first ten names registered at one time.
