Gary Marchal
March 22 (Friday)
Gary was born and raised in the New Orleans area. He was in the Marine
Corps from 1969 - 1971 assigned to the Western White House in San
Clemente, Ca., under then President Richard Nixon. Afterwards, he
returned to the Southeast Louisiana area and worked in the family
business, while majoring in electrical engineering at local colleges. In
November, 1987 he began studying Bonsai under the guidance of Vaughn
Banting. For the past eight years, he has presented programs for many
Bonsai clubs and Societies throughout the United States and Hawaii. He
twice was presented with a Certificate of Merit from Bonsai Clubs
International for being a finalist in the Ben Oki International Design
Competition befor winning it with a Bald Cypress in 1997. Gary enjoys
working on large collected specimens and all varieties of pines, but he
emphasizes wiring as well as scale and proportion in design regardless
of the material. Gary considers himself a serious student and enthusiast
of the art of Bonsai. He is currently living outside New Orleans with
his wife, Colene.
UPCOMING PROGRAMS
Colin Lewis April 18
Colin has recently moved from England and is residing in the states. He
has visited our club in the past for a workshop and was well received.
He has presented at 2001 BCI convention and at Brussel’s and is well
received through out Europe as and outstanding talent and artist. He
will only be with us Thursday and Friday. Don’t miss this opportunity
to see him.
Roy Nagatoshi May 16
Roy has been a regular visitor to our club over the past eight years. He
is very a talented artist and extremely enthusiastic about bonsai
design. He learned the art of bonsai from his father and with him
established the Fuji Bonsai Nursery in Sylmar, California. Roy lectures
and does workshops all over the world. It is always a pleasure to have
him back again.
Mary Miller June 20
Mary is an expert with tropical bonsai. She had a nursery in Homestead,
Florida until Hurricane Hugo decimated it. She is a terrific author and
has published many articles dealing with the care and maintenance of
tropicals. Mary is currently working at Miami Tropical Bonsai in
Florida. She is enthusiastic and a tremendous artist and teacher. Mary
has always delivered an extremely interesting program, be sure to mark
this one on your calendar.
Club Raffle
Jose Cueto did a great job finishing up the ponderosa pine from his
demonstration. The tree will be raffled at the meeting. It was collected
in Wyoming by Andy Smith and purchased from him last June. It would be a
prize in anyone's collection.
Ault Flower Show April 24 - 28
The time is coming quickly and there will be a lot to be done. Stones
have been selected and a plan is completed. Set up will begin about
April 15 and volunteers will be needed. Jim Phillips has the sign up
sheet for the host and hostess, it is very important to have the booth
manned during the show
