Profile: Gail Penner—Recording Secretary |
| It
was an August day in 1961, in rural Manitoba Canada, when our recording
secretary, Gail Penner was born. Gail’s father was a construction man,
and they lived at many different construction sites.
After grade school and high school— in some mighty small schools, Gail received a scholarship to the University of Winnipeg, where she received her B.S. in Biology Continuing on, she received her Masters and Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Chemistry. An offer in 1999, from the University of Cincinnati, brought her to the U.S. She is in the Department of Surgery, doing research on transmission factors in the skeletal muscle. How is that for a background to make shari and jin on bonsai? Her interest in Bonsai started from the many varieties of Larch in Canada, but it was not until 1999 that she joined our Society. Gail has been active in all meetings, shows, and takes all the workshops that her schedule permits. She was first elected Recording Secretary in 2000, and re-elected for another term in 2001. Gail is a dedicated member of the Bonsai Society of Greater Cincinnati.

From the Editor: I know that many of us have spent quite a bit of time praying for the victims of the terrorist attack of September 11th—for the injured, for the firefighters, for all those lost to us forever. If you could, though, spare a little room in your prayers for Mike Schied, it would be appreciated. Mike is having some "repair work" done up at the Cleveland Clinic on the ol’ ticker. Mike, the thoughts and prayers of this group are with you.
